Al principio rimane una certa permeabilità con lo spazio circostante, un frangente liminale tra musica e non-musica dove ciascuno sembra prendere le misure, accomodarsi e intonare gli strumenti (forse con se stessi, oltre che l’uno con l’altro). È l’affascinante parentesi di esitazione che non precede ma piuttosto conduce per mano la performance verso il suo inizio, sino al punto in cui i timidi gesti dei partecipanti si tramutano in enunciazioni, per quanto ermetiche e provvisorie.

La residenza di studio e sperimentazione cui hanno preso parte Heather Frasch e Koen Nutters nell’estate 2021, presso il Kunstraum di Düsseldorf, è giunta a compimento con il generoso coinvolgimento di tante altre voci sensibili al fruttuoso rapporto tra suono e silenzio, tra l’essere umano e gli oggetti che con lui abitano la realtà. La versione per ensemble del progetto “And / In” (fondato su tre princìpi: Objects and/in silence. Text and/in sound. Reading and/in actions.) riflette questo processo di inclusione indiscriminata, finanche disordinata, e nondimeno risultante in una comunione d’intenti (anti)espressivi colma di grazia e dedizione per le più minute manifestazioni acustiche.

Così, con la complicità del qui costituito Wandelweiser Klangraum Ensemble, il duo Frasch/Nutters fa dell’inazione una scelta consapevole, dell’abbozzo di un’esile figura motivica un atto strettamente necessario, muovendo da un presque rien di tratteggi e impulsi sconnessi alla conquista pacifica, senza fretta – e solo in parte ottenuta – della consonanza. Un allineamento che non sembra avvenire in maniera programmatica bensì istintiva, come steli che per loro natura convergano quietamente in un’unica fioritura. Disposti intorno all’onnipresente crepitìo di piccoli oggetti che collidono tra loro, i timbri strumentali e i frammenti di recitato si affacciano a intermittenza, in certa misura ignari delle “simmetrie storpie” che verranno a prodursi a ogni istante, in un moto circolare a mezz’aria che ricorda la danza delle sculture sospese di Alexander Calder.

Viene qui documentato un processo performativo dal carattere eminentemente Wandelweiser, in cui il fugace, epifanico raggiungimento di una tonalità condivisa non può eccedere l’importanza della dimensione rituale, perennemente preparatoria che lo ha docilmente invitato. E ogni ritorno a queste armonie oggettivate si dà ugualmente, splendidamente irrisolto.

At first there remains a certain permeability with the surrounding space, a liminal juncture between music and non-music where everyone seems to take measures, settle down and attune the instruments (perhaps with themselves, as well as with each other). It is the fascinating parenthesis of hesitation that does not precede but rather leads the performance by the hand towards its beginning, to the point where the timid gestures of the participants turn into utterances, however hermetic and provisional.

The study and experimentation residency in which Heather Frasch and Koen Nutters took part in the summer of 2021, at the Kunstraum in Düsseldorf, came to completion with the generous involvement of many other voices sensitive to the fruitful relationship between sound and silence, between human beings and the objects that inhabit their same reality. The ensemble version of the “And / In” project (based on three principles: Objects and/in silence. Text and/in sound. Reading and/in actions.) reflects this process of indiscriminate, even disorderly inclusion, nonetheless resulting in a communion of (anti-)expressive intentions brimming with grace and dedication to the smallest acoustic manifestations.

Thus, with the complicity of the here established Wandelweiser Klangraum Ensemble, the Frasch / Nutters duo turns inaction into a conscious choice, the sketching of a slender motivic figure into a strictly necessary act, moving from a presque rien of disjointed outlines and impulses to the peaceful, unhurried – and only partially achieved – conquering of consonance. An alignment that doesn’t seem to take place programmatically but instinctively, like stems that by their nature quietly converge into a single bloom. Laid out around the omnipresent rustle of small objects colliding with each other, the instrumental timbres and recited fragments appear intermittently, to a certain extent unaware of the “crippled symmetries” that will occur at each moment, in a circular motion in mid-air reminiscent of the dance of Alexander Calder’s suspended sculptures.

A performative process with an eminently Wandelweiser character is documented here, in which the fleeting, epiphanic attainment of a shared tonality cannot exceed the importance of the ritualistic, forever preparatory dimension that docilely invited him. And every return to these objectivized harmonies gives itself as equally, exquisitely unresolved.
