C’è chi al descrittivismo o alla narrazione preferisce la mimesi, la piena rispondenza a impulsi tali da rispecchiare l’istintività della natura, più che l’anelito espressivo dell’umano sentire. Ciò non significa che l’esordio del Copenhagen Clarinet Choir, fondato nel 2020, sia avulso da “musicalità” – tutt’altro: i brani ivi presentati parrebbero, idealmente, tradurre in linguaggio sonoro i tratti distintivi delle forme di vita al di fuori della nostra limitata sfera sensoriale, o addirittura estrinsecarne il potenziale timbrico e ritmico che le loro sembianze e i loro comportamenti suggeriscono all’immaginazione performativa.

Nelle sei composizioni di Organism – quattro delle quali a firma di Carolyn Goodwin – si manifestano configurazioni sempre nuove di un’ecologia sonora spasmodica nella sua innata mutevolezza. Creature bio- ed elettromorfe respirano e si animano per tramite dei fiati, le loro deviazioni tonali come fremiti delle loro fibre costitutive.
Una poetica, quella del CCC, che se anche adotta stilemi più caratterizzati e “canonici”, lo fa piegando le strutture di matrice minimalista alle proprie irrinunciabili esigenze formali: phasing impercettibili, intrecci di pattern pressoché identici tali da produrre spostamenti apparenti nella duttile materia acustica (“An Old Song, Resung”).

Un universo faunistico “aumentato” è certamente la suggestione dominante di queste invenzioni da camera (“Flocking”, “Hive Mind”), ma forse persino più affascinanti risultano i passaggi in cui le presenze acustiche si mantengono sottocutanee, quasi inavvertite, in tutto e per tutto somiglianti alla silenziosa sinfonia dell’interiorità corporea (“Water Piece”).
Drone music, microtonalità e improvvisazione controllata intrattengono una fertile coesistenza tra i solchi di questo vibrante recital, biglietto da visita di un ensemble che in futuro potrebbe contribuire in modo ancor più decisivo all’ampliamento del repertorio contemporaneo incentrato sul clarinetto.

To descriptivism or narration some prefer mimesis, a full correspondence with impulses that reflect the instinctiveness of nature, rather than the expressive yearning of human feeling. This doesn’t mean that the debut of the Copenhagen Clarinet Choir, founded in 2020, is divorced from “musicality” – far from it: the pieces here presented would ideally seem to translate into sound language the distinctive traits of life forms outside of our limited sensorial sphere, or even fulfill the timbral and rhythmic potential that their appearance and their behaviors suggest to the performative imagination.

In the six compositions of Organism – four of which by Carolyn Goodwin – ever new configurations manifest themselves of a sound ecology spasmodic in its innate changeability. Bio- and electromorphous creatures breathe and animate themselves through the reeds, their tonal deviations like quivering of their constituent fibers.
A poetics, that of the CCC, which even when adopting more characterized and “canonical” stylistic features, it does so by bending the structures of minimalist lineage to its own indispensable formal needs: imperceptible phasings, the intertwining of almost identical patterns such as to produce apparent shifts in the ductile acoustic matter (“An Old Song, Resung”).

An “augmented” faunal universe is certainly the dominant impression of these chamber inventions (“Flocking”, “Hive Mind”), but perhaps even more fascinating are the passages in which the acoustic presences remain subcutaneous, almost unnoticed, in all respects resembling the silent symphony of bodily interiority (“Water Piece”).
Drone music, microtonality and controlled improvisation entertain a fertile coexistence between the grooves of this vibrant recital, the calling card of an ensemble that may in the future contribute even more decisively to the expansion of the contemporary repertoire centered on the clarinet.
